Markup and margin use the same profit but divide it by different numbers, so markup is always the bigger percentage. Platform fees come out of your margin: check them with the fee calculators.

Formulas
Markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost. Margin = (price − cost) ÷ price. Price from markup = cost × (1 + markup). Price from margin = cost ÷ (1 − margin).
Reselling on a marketplace?
Your margin shrinks by the platform's cut. A 33% margin on eBay can be closer to 20% after final value and payment fees, so check the eBay or Etsy profit calculator before you set a price.
Questions
What's the difference between markup and margin?
Both use the same profit. Markup divides it by the cost; margin divides it by the selling price. Buy for $40 and sell for $60: $20 profit is a 50% markup and a 33.3% margin.
How do I calculate markup?
Subtract the cost from the price, divide by the cost and multiply by 100. ($60 − $40) ÷ $40 = 50%.
How do I price something for a 50% margin?
Divide the cost by (1 − 0.50). A $40 item needs a $80 price for a 50% margin, which is a 100% markup.
What is a keystone markup?
Doubling the cost, a 100% markup. It gives a 50% margin and is a common starting point in retail.
Can margin be over 100%?
No. Margin is a share of the price, so even if the item cost nothing it tops out at 100%. Markup has no upper limit.
