Break-even calculator
Enter your fixed costs, what you get per sale and what each unit costs you, to see how many you need to sell before you make a profit.
- Profit per unit
- $15.00
- Break-even
- 67 units
- Break-even sales
- $1,675.00
Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price − variable cost), rounded up. Every unit after that is profit.
Formula
Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ (price per unit − variable cost per unit). Break-even sales = break-even units × price.
Use the price after fees
On a marketplace, use what you receive per sale, not the listing price. A $25 item on eBay may pay out about $21 after fees, which changes the break-even point a lot. The fee calculators on this site give you that number.
Questions
How do I calculate the break-even point?
Divide your fixed costs by the profit on each unit (price minus variable cost). $1,000 of fixed costs and $15 profit per unit means 1,000 ÷ 15 = 66.7, so 67 units.
What counts as a fixed cost?
Anything you pay regardless of how many you sell: equipment, software subscriptions, rent, design work, a first batch of molds or tooling.
What counts as a variable cost?
Costs for each unit: materials, packaging, shipping and per-sale platform fees if you haven't already taken them out of the price.
What if I can't break even?
If the price doesn't cover the variable cost, every sale loses money. Raise the price, cut the cost per unit, or both.
